The deep seabed is often perceived as empty, distant, with the horizontal geographical distance added to the depth and darkness of the abyss. Science plays a central role in the framing of its representations as well as the regulation of its uses and the structure of arguments in the public debate. The way LIFEDEEPER is set well illustrates this link between deep-sea research and human society concerns.

Usually when one thinks of deep-sea sulphide mountains, the first image that comes to mind is that of extremely active systems emitting superheated (350°C) hydrothermal water at their summit and associated with abundant fauna.
